A small list of random ass sites Iâve found useful when writing:
Fragrantica: perfume enthusiast site that has a long list of scents. v helpful when youâre writing your guilty pleasure abo fics
Just One Cookbook: recipe site that centers on Japanese cuisine. Lots of different recipes to browse, plenty of inspiration so youâre not just âramen and sushiâÂ
This comparing heights page: gives you a visual on height differences between characters
A page on the colors of bruises+healing stages: well just that. there you go. describe your bruises properly
McCormick Science Institute: yes this is a real thing. the site shows off research on spices and gives the history on them. be historically accurate or just indulge in mindless fascination. boost your restaurant au with it
A Glossary of Astronomy Terms: to pepper in that sweet terminology for your astrophysics major college au needs
Adding to this since Iâm working on a shifter au one-shot:
Canine Body Language
Feline Body Language
More:
Cocktail Flow: a site with a variety of cocktails thatâs pretty easy to navigate and offers photos of the drinks. You can sort by themes, strengths, type and base. My only real annoyance with this site is that the drinks are sometimes sorted into ~masculine~ and ~feminine~ but ehhhh. Itâs great otherwise.
Tie-A-Tie: a site centered around ties, obviously. I stumbled upon it while researching tie fabrics but thereâs a lot more to look at. It offers insight into dress code for events, tells you how to tie your ties, and has a section on the often forgotten about tie accessories
Even more:
Types of High Heels: A page describing twenty five different types of high heels. It gives a description and pictures. Shake it up from just âstilettos and kitten heelsâ
Random Job Generator: Exactly as it says. The site offer more generators like characters, plots, or town names.
Glossary of Hosiery Terms: Figure out what is what on a pair of stockings.
Menâs Dress Shoe Guide: A quick guide describing the eight most common types of menâs dress shoes. Pics included.
Types of Womenâs Coats: Descriptions and pics of various different types of coats.
This whole scene is important ,Craigâs parents are now one of the best parents in animation always checking if their childrens are having problems and also Craig saying how is hard to be in a new class
what the fuck. theres not even a fucking joke here. its just the fucking alphabet. i was expecting some kind of fucking meme like âgunâ or âjohn cenaâ or something like that but no its just the fucking alphabet. here. on tumblr.com. 26 users just fucking banded together to write the alphabet. what the fuck, man.

âYou have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.â
â Madeleine L'Engle (via lifeofquotations)
Ideas for non-combat encounters/events
For when you want some variety for your tabletop RPG. Â These events will also give your players a chance to use character skills they donât often have opportunities for.
Natural Disaster - Have the town the PCs are in catch on fire and see what they do! Â Do they cut their losses and run? Â Do they heroically try to save trapped townspeople? Â What do they do about the aftermath? Â Natural disasters are an interesting challenge because there can be lots of danger and drama without necessarily having a villain. Â It may also get your PCs to use skills they donât commonly have a chance to. Â You could also try floods, earthquakes, raging storms while at sea, etc.
Powerful Fortress - Put one of your partyâs goals in a location where they wonât be able to prevail through combat alone (Example: a fortress where they are vastly outnumbered). Â Your players will have to rely on either stealth or guile (or both) to accomplish their goal. Â The pacing of such events can be frustrating to some players, but few sessions are as rewarding as a creatively executed heist or infiltration.
Dangerous Crossing - Give them a dangerous physical obstacle to overcome. Â A canyon, or a raging river, or quicksand or an old battleground littered with traps and mines.
Festival - Have the PCs encounter a festival or tournament! Â With lots of contests! This could be a good opportunity for them to build their fame and fortune (especially if you allow gambling). Â Some of my favorite sessions have involved festivals.
Entertainment - Put the PCs in a situation where they have to entertain someone. Â What do they come up with?
Letter - Have one of the PCs receive a letter, either from an NPC theyâve dealt with before or from someone involved with their backstory. Â This is a good way to make the consequences of their actions seem more real. Â You can also use it to introduce new plotlines/sidequests.
Crafting Challenge - Put the PCs in a situation where they need to craft something in order to accomplish their goal. Â Maybe they need to make something in order to fix a mechanism? Â Or in order to satisfy some local gift-giving custom? Â Or they need a forgery? Â Maybe as part of an exchange for something else they need?
Lost and Found - Have your PCs discover someone or something that is clearly lost. Â Maybe they find an infant in the wilderness. Â Or a key with a strange inscription, or some kind of talisman. Â Throw in a clue or two to present your players with a tantalizing mystery. Â
Inhospitable Wilderness - Have the PCs go somewhere itâs an effort just to survive. Â A barren desert, a treacherous swamp with poison gasses, a forest so dense the ground never sees the sun, or even the bottom of the ocean. Â Test their endurance and survival skills!
Dinner Party - Have the PCs be summoned to a formal event! Â Test them on the battlegrounds of social grace and etiquette! Â Even better if itâs in a dangerous environment or an alien culture.
Thief - Have something important stolen from the PCs. Â See how they handle it.
Needle in a Haystack - Give the PCs something very difficult to find. Â Like a single specific housecat in a sprawling metropolis, or a legendary weapon of which there are many fakes/copies. Â
Really, if you need any more inspiration, look at your playerâs character sheets and see if theyâve invested any points in a skill they havenât gotten to use much. Â Then invent a challenge they could feasibly use that skill for. Â If you canât think of a situation that could be helped by an Appraise, Craft: Calligraphy or Handle Animal check, you need to practice your own creative problem solving skills!
This is the best thing Iâve seen today. Hope to live to see the day when every parent is as accepting as this

IDK IF YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS WEBSITE YET, BUT I DONâT EVEN CARE IF YOU DO.
CHARAHUBÂ BASICALLY ALLOWS YOU TO MAKE A DIRECTORY OF ALL YOUR OCS.
LIKE SO
AND SO (they let you get super detailed)
It lets you store 100 characters (you gain 2 extra slots whenever someone uses your referral code) and 10 images per character. You can even make GROUPS to organize them a little moreâ per RP or something. Image files canât be too big either.
BUT if you want more file size, more character slots, and more other stuff, you can get a subscription! Donât worry, subscriptions are super cheap (take notes, deviantART)!
Ok you can go make one now.
pssst dudes charahub is really cool for character reference stuff. i have one, i should really make more use of it.
How did I not know of this?!
âYou canât deprogram them.â
So just, allow a sober person to keep the dog?
This is the police trying to make people panic about legalization.
IF YOU LEGALIZE THESE DRUGS WEâLL KILL THIS DOG is totally a normal and cool thing that professionals interested in protecting the people say
This is one of the things thatâs really hard to get behind unless you have an in depth understanding of working dogs, especially police dogs. These dogs cannot be pet homed; theyâre liabilities, even if they are solely drug-detection dogs (and most are cross trained). And it is near-impossible to retrain scent detection dogs, so the only options would be donating to police organizations where marijuana is still illegal, selling to private companies (prisons, schools, etc. especially), or putting to sleep. I do believe those first two options are on the table, realistically, but thatâs still a lot of dogs suddenly jobless that are a huge liability upon the police departments that house them. Working dogs, especially high caliber ones, go bonkers if they arenât worked. However, a lot of these articles have been taken out of context. Yes, itâs likely that some police folk were trying to do a scare tactic, but Iâm fairly sure someone mentioned it was a possibility that the dogs would be put to sleep and folks ran with it, as well.
Nope, no, no, very untrue. They can be pet dogs, in fact most of them live with their handlersâ families during the 2/3 of their life they arenât working. They can absolutely be retrained or they can be retired early.
The easiest way to retrain something like this is to make the particular stimulus (marijuana) the cue for a different behavior then it was previously a cue for. Behavior A goes on extinction or is punished and Behavior B is trained and reinforced. You still have a dog that alerts to marijuana but it alerts in a different way than it alerts to still illegal drugs. This can be backed up by training data for legal reasons.
Unfortunately many K-9 units donât have the resources or experience to do this. But euthanasia is still far, far from the only option.
Uh yeah as someone who has trained actual working drug dogs, the fear-mongering that itâs impossible to retrain these dogs is justâŚ. not true? And itâs something thatâs done very often. The idea that a dog can only search and alert for one scent is severely understimating a dogâs capabilities. Us humans have far weaker noses and we can still distinguish multiple scents at a time. Of course a dog would be even better at it than us, so 99% of drug dogs or dual purpose dogs are trained for multiple scents. Itâs more cost effective and more efficient in the field. It should also be noted that currently, most stations DO NOT train dual purpose/cross-trained dogs (that is, dogs that detect drugs AND attack suspects). They are very much the exception and not the rule, and that is EXACTLY because of reasons like this, as well as public safety concerns. Those TSA drug dogs? They arenât going to bite anyone. The ones that search highschools? Theyâre p much safe, too. Hell, most departments choose to use an entirely different breed of dog for scent work now. Drug detection dogs are not hard to home, and generally are not liabilities. As well, dogs arenât so primitive and stupid they canât just learn something new.
Also, just to clarify; a protection dog that does tracking is not dual purpose. Tracking a suspect and finding articles is not the same as finding drugs.
This is all good information. Iâm boosting for the information sharing, not because I have anything to add other than: yes, working dogs need a job, and so if retired they would not be easy pet dogs that just laze around and only need minimal enrichment- but that doesnât mean thereâs nowhere for them to go. You just canât adopt them out to whatever softhearted members of the public want one.Â
Fox canceled Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Twitter is rightfully angry. This show did wonders for thoughtful, authentic representation; Iâm really sad to see it go.Â

đ¨This is a Red Alert for net neutrality đ¨
Last December, the FCC voted to to kill net neutrality. If we do not take action, this will kill the free and open internet as we know it. The internet needs youâall of youâto make sure your voices are heard NOW.
We need all hands on deck for this one. It may be our last chance. If youâre feeling under-informed and overwhelmed about why net neutrality is so incredibly important, we have this handy guide just for you.
Hereâs what you can do to save the internet:
In mid-May, the Senate will vote on a resolution to overrule the FCC using the Congressional Review Act (CRA). We only need one more vote in the Senate to win. Write or call your Senators or Representatives. You can also text BATTLE to 384-387 to get more information on how to write to your reps. You can do this, Tumblr.
Join us and dozens of your other favorite companies like Etsy, Vimeo, Reddit, and GitHub to raise awareness with the Red Alert campaign being run by Battle for the Net. Just add this small widget to your Tumblr to let your followers know how they can contact their reps. Itâs as easy as copying and pasting the small line of code right into the customize theme page on the web.
This is important. This matters. Itâs up to you to help.Â
Disney vs. 7 early fairytalesÂ
The 1812 version of Snow White is even worse when you consider that the girl was only seven years old in the tale (plus her unconscious body ended up being carted around by the prince until one of his servants accidentally woke her up). Also, in The Little Mermaid, the mermaidâs unable to speak because she had her tongue cut out >__<
But Iâd love to see faithful adaptations of the original tales. Especially Bluebeard. We need a Bluebeard adaptation.
Actually, the original-original pre-Grimm Brothersâ stories that were passed around Europe via oral tradition are nowhere near as violent as the Grimmâs made them. Cinderellaâs stepsisters were never ugly and kept their eyes, Snow Whiteâs mother was not even a villain (instead a group of bandits were), and instead of spending the whole story napping Sleeping Beauty outwitted a dangerous bandit leader, wouldnât let him sleep with her, and saved herself.Â
The original oral stories were radically changed by the Brothers Grimm to fit their personal and political beliefs. Most notably, they often added in female characters solely for the purpose of making them evil villains and took away most of the heroinesâ agency and intelligence. Both brothers belonged to a small fanatical sect of Catholicism that vilified women because of the idea of Original Sin and Wilhelm in particular had a particularly deep hatred of women. The Grimms were actually pretty horrible people. Those cannibalistic queens and ugly stepsisters and the mass amount of violence against women didnât exist until the Grimms wanted them to. Their ideas stuck so soundly though that we now assume they were in the original tales and that these terrible characters and ideas come out of some perceived barbaric Old World culture. But in truth theyâre really the Grimmsâ weird obsession with hating women showing through. The original oral folklore focused on the heroesâ and heroinesâ good deeds and used them as ways to teach cultural norms and a societyâs rules and encouraged girls to be quick-witted and street-savvy instead of passive princesses, and the Grimms promptly stripped that all away.Â
âGrimms Bad Girls and Bold Boysâ by Ruth Bottingheimer is an excellent book on this
Something to add to my reading list.
So this guy Franz Xaver Von Schonwerth collected all these fairytales and in the 2000â˛s they were discovered in an attic and published. Unlike the Grimm brothers, he did not edit anything. The Grimms deliberately edited the stories to fit middle class tastes - they also were trying to create a national identity with these tales as a touchstone. Meanwhile Von Schonwerthâs goal was documenting the Bavarian oral traditions - which is why he didnât edit the stories in his notes.Â
And the stories are weird and intense. Some have the classic âbeginning middle end + moralâ - some are just âhereâs stuff that happenedâŚ.âÂ
And some of the endingsâŚyou know that story about a weary soldier who performs three tasks and gets to marry the princess? In this book, the soldier is continually rejected by both the king and the princess, so he brings an army to burn down the entire castle with everyone inside. The end, lol.
The other interesting thing is that while the Grimms tales had mostly female protagonists, Von Schonwerthâs have as many boys trying to escape nasty situations as girls. There are boys who cuddle up with frogs to discover that the frogs are princesses, there are boys called âKing Goldenhair,â there are brothers fighting, and fathers sending sons out to stop being a burden on the family. In the introduction, Maria Tatar posits that the Grimms, having suffered from being orphans, may have avoided these types of stories.Â
Anyway, if you like fairytales, The Turnip Princess book is worth the read.

The First Act.
How to start a novel, set up your plot and characters, and get onto the heart of the story!
This is a combination of the anon questions âdo you have any advice for newbie writers on pacing, especially in the first act?â and âI never know how to start my story is there any tips that you can give me,â along with @breannascribblesâs âdo you have any advice on writing beginnings because I really struggle with it?â
Iâm writing this under the assumption everyoneâs seen these three articles already, so be sure to take a look at them:
A Killer First Chapter
Establishing the Status Quo
How does pacing work?
Other things you should be aware ofâŚ
The inciting event(s.)
The inciting event should happen within the first 5% of the story. If you have multiple inciting events due to more than one POV character, a highly complex plot, or a âpre-inciting eventâ (i.e. something that catches the readerâs attention full force and shows them where the primary inciting event will likely occur so they can anticipate it,) then the events may stretch out farther than this. In general though, if you have more than 5k words before the character dives into their journey and the reader glimpses the plot as a whole, then something probably needs to be cut out or rearranged.
The set up.Â
Some books require a lot of set up in order for the characterâs development or the plotâs beginning to make sense and hit home, while other books can have the set up built in after the plot starts rolling. Write out a list of what needs to be set up for your story and determine whether the reader needs to know each piece either prior to the inciting event, prior to the second act, or at some other point before the climax. All set up should be delayed until itâs needed, except in cases where itâs easy to work it into an already important scene.
If you donât need it, take it out.Â
If that scene, that conversation, that action sequence doesnât either develop the plot or relay something new and important about the characters in the long run, then it doesnât belong in the first act. First acts, like first chapters, are there to show the reader what the book will be about and catch their interest so thoroughly that they canât look away. That scene youâre attached to but isnât really necessary to the story probably wonât be interesting to a still critical reader whoâs only just learning about your story and doesnât yet have the attachment to it that you do.
Something. Must. Happen.Â
While thereâs many things you want to hold off on in the first act because theyâll hit harsher after some tension is built up, this in no way means that nothing interesting or important should be going on! Donât leave your characters to a series of mild unemotional successes and quiet conversations simply because itâs still the beginning of the story. Hit them where it hurts, make them taste the failure that will soon all but destroy them, give them choices they donât want to make. A novel length story can be a very long journey â donât give it a slow, monotonous start by treating your characters too tenderly in the beginning.
Play with different starting points.Â
Think about the way the story would change if you started it at different points, with different characters, or in different locations. What does that do to the overall tension of the first act? How many scenes and chapters would you need with different starting points? Try plotting out âtension vs timeâ graphs. From there, which starting points give you the most consistent cycles of rising and falling tension with more rising than falling? (Remember to include both action-created tension and emotional tension in your graphs!)
Remember, this deeper look at your pacing through the first act can be done either during the outlining phase or after the first draft has already been written. For the first draft itâs always best to write your novel in whichever way helps you get the words on the page.Â
Thereâs a lot more information in the linked articles, so check those out!
For more writing tips from Bryn, view the archive catalog or the complete tag!
Like no offense to my friends and family but if I had the chance to abandon this timeline for a medieval fantasy land I would absolutely do it, goodbye student loans and depression hello cool magic shit and most likely an early death by the sword (as it should be)
This is important!!! Also you can go through the thread for more info about this !!
