I’ve said “I hate this” so many times on this website, and never actually meant it, because “I hate this” is just shorthand for ‘this is an example of a meme given a twist I wasn’t expecting with intent to surprise’. Which is, in of itself, a meme on this site. God damn it.

The rapidity of a meme’s introduction to its zenith to its decline is so rapid that in ten years, you’ll need a damn twenty-page manual to explain this. ok let me see if i can break this down easily. YMCA is the easiest place to start - the song itself has become a meme over time with people changing the lyrics to reference other pop cultural events. so YMCA is meme one (1)

this first lyric replacement (”take the breadsticks and run”) is a reference to the tumblr meme ‘stuffing breadsticks into my purse’. i think everyone remembers that one so i wont bother to explain it. that’s meme two (2)

“man door hand hook car door” is a meme of its own, a creepypasta from i dont remember when. it was a terrible stupid retelling of the generic ‘stuck in a car while hook handed man tries to kill us’ story so the stupid title caught on for memorability. that in and of itself is meme three (3)

‘gun’ is… yeah i dont know how to explain gun. long story short you add gun to the end of a phrase instead of what you expect the last word to be. its shock funny. its everywhere but its popular to add to “man door hand hook car door” for.. some reason? gun is meme four (4)

and the thing is, this four meme combo is something thats gone around before. meme combos are, itself, a meme. which means taking this meme combo and mixing in another meme actually becomes meme five (5)

which leaves us at loss.jpg. loss.jpg was a terrible bad comic supposed to be about some tragic event, but it was presented so poorly literally no one takes it seriously, and for some reason recreating the four-panel setup has become popular. so thats meme six (6)

(but i need to add that this is the greatest version of loss.jpg i think i’ve ever seen. the initial ‘young man’ lines up with the guy bursting through the door, and the shock meme ‘gun’ matches the shock scene of the woman in the hospital and idk if OP even thought about that but it makes this just so much better)

internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl

common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)

ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)

an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous

a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps

a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)

some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself

this is why discourse needs to start with listening and learning, why online discourse is often so terrible, and why we see people falling prey to terf pipelines.

if you see things you instinctively disagree with, it’s SO important to understand why you disagree.

because when you explore the why, you will sometimes find that in your efforts to find the words to describe your discomfort, that you were right to disagree because someone who is more educated on the subject matter has articulated the why in a way that helps you understand that discomfort.

but you will also sometimes find that someone who is more educated on the subject can explain why your disagreement is actually an internalized bias that you had a blind spot to and weren’t aware of it until it was laid out for you in a certain way.

by nature of the internet, you will see a lot of things you both agree with and disagree with. and it’s incredibly easy to create an unintentional echo chamber where you only see things that support what you already know and believe. when something that is foreign to your current understanding of the world enters your perception, it is a shock to see. and that shock can often lead to an instinctive response of defending what you already know. this is how we get bad faith discourse.

not enough people are willing to examine their discomfort and create potential learning opportunities for themselves because they are too comfortable in their understanding of the world. but it is crucial to occasionally step outside of your comfort zone in order to continue to grow as a person.

if you see something by you don’t understand it is worth taking the effort to dig into it and take the time to understand why. do research, ask someone you trust. actively seek education constantly. we all need to constantly be learning in order to better ourselves because that’s the only way that we can make the world a better place for all of us.
