SFTH Survey Analysis

For the past three months, I have released questionnaires into the Shoot From The Hip fandom in order to collect statistics regarding opinions, data and to see if I can find anything interesting or worth nothing. And here is my analysis of each question based on the current results as of the end of August.

On average, 288 people filled in the form which makes me really happy knowing that many people took time to do it.

Question 1: How did you find SFTH?

The overwhelming majority of people (over 70%) said that they found them through short form content such as YouTube Shorts or TikToks. This wasn’t a surprise, this was how I myself found them and it’s easier for people to be interested after seeing a minute long clip. 

Question 2: When did you get into SFTH?

The results here were mainly split between 2024 and 2025, but around 5% more people said 2025. This is understandable, they’ve only been growing online and fandom is widespread across social media making it reach new people. The quality in their videos has also been growing due to the amount of support they have getting bigger, but this goes without saying. 

Question 3: How many shows have you seen live?

I’m sure this is where the large fandom impacted the results, as over two thirds of responses stated that they hadn’t seen a SFTH show. The main reason is most likely geographical location as I have spoken to many fans in European countries or in America or in other places that haven’t had the opportunity to travel to see them, especially since they don’t do a lot of shows outside of the UK. The second most chosen response was 1 show which is also understandable. This was followed by 2 shows and then 6+ which was interesting.

Question 4: What shortform game is your favourite?

This was one of my favourite questions because there are so many games to choose from but there were still two very clear fan favourites. These were freeze tag and party quirks, with party quirks taking the crown. Some games only received a couple votes across all three questionnaires and these ones were sound effects, A-Z, translator and hand of God. These made sense as they aren’t as common as genre or time warp for example. Translator was a surprise as it’s a bit more common but I suppose it doesn’t compare to the many other options.

Question 5: Which guessing game is your favourite?

Based on the previous question, it’s not hard to guess that party quirks won this one in a landslide. I think its popularity is due to the involvement from all four members. While everyone gets involved in late for work, it is never in the same, absolutely chaotic way they do in party quirks as everybody is playing a drastically different character.

Questions 6 and 7: Do you have the patreon? And if so, do you think it is worth it?

A little over 50% of responses have the patreon and out of those people, 100% believe the patreon is worth it, which shows how much content you can get on there and the effort the boys put into making sure people get their money's worth.

Questions 8 and 9: Are you part of the beetroot brigade? And if so, do you think it is worth it?

This was a stark contrast to the patreon question. Only 7% of responses said they had the YouTube Membership and a quarter of those people believed it wasn’t worth it. However, some people clicked this answer without saying they had the membership.

Some answers from people who said they didn’t think it was worth it were:

‘No real perks contrary to patreon.’

‘Doesn’t really offer anything but support.’

‘You don’t get much benefit from it apart from special characters in chat.’

Question 10: Where do you interact with the SFTH fandom the most?

This is where you need to take the results with a pinch of salt. While Tumblr took 50% of the responses, it is important to note where this form was posted and how that works. I shared the form on Discord, Instagram and Tumblr and with the help of my friends put it on Twitter and Reddit too. However, it’s important to note how easily posts can get lost in the Discord, especially due to the sheer amount of people messaging on there. I also struggled to get the form on TikTok, so with all these technicalities this question cannot be used to measure where the largest concentration of fans are on social media.

Question 11: If you make any fan content, please select all types that you make.

A majority of fans either don’t make content or they make fanart, which is followed by fanfiction and then edits. These are very common forms of fan content so this isn’t a surprise, but it is great to be part of a community that is so artistic. I remember the community used to seem so small with very limited content, and now it’s amassed to something really beautiful. A few unique responses were people saying they translate videos, make music, write poetry or cosplay which are also such amazing forms of support and expression. I love this fandom so much.

Question 12: Which special is your favourite?

Only in August did I decide to add the mini special the the Underbelly Boulevard as an option, deciding that if SFTH had it on their specials playlist, it counted. Overall, HUGE won, with a third of the votes. Jingle Boys and West End Boys were practically tied throughout all the questionnaires and who had more votes fluctuated.

Question 13: What is your favourite longform? 

Ah, the big question. In the feedback section and just overall, I’ve had people reaching out to me asking or telling me that they can’t pick a favourite longform and to make this question multiple choice or to have an option to pick all of them. And while I understand how difficult it is to pick 1 longform out of nearly 60, I couldn’t possibly add an ‘all’ option because that would mess up a lot of the data. While multiple choice would be favourable, it would be messier. But I am working out some changes for September’s survey that should probably leave people a bit happier.

But now the big results.

Never Give Annabelle A Gun won, being in a pretty substantial lead. While all the other longforms in the top 10s were only a couple votes apart, NGAAG always had at least 15 votes more than second place.

While I don’t think I can pinpoint one similarity that these longforms all share, it’s clear the fandom enjoy queer love stories, with a majority of them being played by Tom and Luke. Also I am realising how many longforms start with ‘The.’ It’s interesting comparing this to the longforms with the most views. For example, The Evil Make A Wish Kid has the second highest amount of views longform-wise and wasn’t even in the top 15. Though The Milkman is the most viewed longform and is quite high on this list.

It’s interesting comparing this to June’s questionnaire, aka the first one. The longform question was not multiple choice, and simply an open ended question where people had to type in their answer. This led to people putting multiple longforms, or patreon longforms when I was looking for the ones available on YouTube without payment. It also led to me having to count every individual longform vote and tally them because I was unsure on how to use Google Sheets. 

There are some differences compared to June. Toby’s Secret Pocket had more votes, securing its way into the top 10 but in following months it has decreased in popularity. It was a similar thing for Clarissa’s DIY Wedding, The Grape Depression and Beetroots and Murder, all three easily getting over 10 votes previously but now struggling to get 5. 

I will admit this may be to the new structure of the question. Instead of giving people an open ended question where they’d type in a longform, which invites more thought than looking through the list of all the longforms. I think it’s more intimidating having every longform listed out and having to choose one, instead of typing out your thoughts. When typing it in, people will put in longforms that come to mind, ones that stand out or are memorable. But when all the options are there, it’s harder for longforms to stick out because all of them are in front of you. However, I will not be changing the layout of this question as making the question open ended leads to time wasted counting votes and making lists. But I will probably be adding an open ended question for people to put in multiple longforms and reasons if they want.

While I don’t think a lot of people have a ‘least favourite’ longform, there are longforms that seem to take the crown for least popular. These longforms, I’ve observed, have had less than 10 votes over ALL three surveys.

There are other ones such as I Don’t Want To Visit Grandma and The Lollipop Lady’s Revenge but as those are stil relatively recent I will not be adding them in this list.

I wasn’t too surprised by the results of which longforms are fan favourites, I was shocked at some other results. I didn’t expect BUS to gain more the 5 votes but at points it did, similarly with earlier longforms such as The Dark Moons of Slough. On the other end, I expected longforms such as The Bard With A Scar and The Midnight Mystery to gain more responses but this doesn’t seem to be the case.

After Never Give Annabelle A Gun came out, I was sure that there would be a pattern with the newest longforms being the most popular, but this hypothesis was proven wrong when The Haunted Diary Entry came out and received very little votes.

Question 14: Favourite ship? 

This was an optional question, and the data isn’t going to be as clean because I haven’t tallied up all the individual written responses but it isn’t too hard to find patterns and realise which ships are the most popular.

The ones the came up many times were Annabutch, Ditch, Clamanda, AngelJohn, Stag Husbands, and WishedHorns.

There’s a clear correlation with the ships wit the most responses and the popular longforms. It seemed that the happy lesbians have dominated the fandom, being the most voted for longform and ship. I really liked going through this question, especially since I got to see ships I hadn’t heard or thought of, such as GemmaDonna.

Question 15: Favourite character?

Also optional, this question I understand was harder than the ship question. Because while not every longform has a ship, every longform has characters, making the choice harder. So I don’t blame people for putting more than one character in their answers, I was struggling myself when trying to think of one. 

Though there was a clear winner, one I could tell purely by scrolling through the responses and that is Derek.

Tom characters seemed to be quite popular overall, with Peter Steven, Amanda Wilson and Xavier also having a decent amount of responses.
