I've been fascinated for some time by what makes people susceptible to believing that ChatGPT is superior to their own thoughts.
I found this blog post about how ChatGPT can "enhance" journaling. The blog post itself was "co-written" by ChatGPT, and you can tell.
This is one of the most godawful pieces of writing I've ever run across in the wild; incredibly repetitive, rewording the same sentences over and over again and stacking them into interminable paragraphs of empty sludge. There is one "idea" in here, "I tell ChatGPT to ask me questions to help me reflect on myself, and I think that helps me to journal and think in new perspectives," and it is repeated in slightly different words like 50 times.
Expose a copy of Strunk & White's The Elements of Style to this slop and it'll start oozing blood from the pages like in a horror movie.
But the thing is, this guy wasn't always that bad of a writer. You see, I got to that blog post after reading this blog post from 4 years prior, which is about meditation and the difficulty in defining meditation in a way that can be operationalized for objective study, and it is much clearer, more structured, and actually contains ideas in it.
ChatGPT clearly made this guy's writing much, much worse, but he appears to believe that the opposite happened.
His problem isn't "being a bad writer," in fact, he didn't even write the whole thing, ChatGPT did some of it. His problem isn't exactly "inability to evaluate his own writing" either. You see, evaluating your own writing is about asking whether you communicated your ideas in the most effective way possible. This blog post certainly failed, because it argues that you should involve ChatGPT in your writing process while demonstrating very clearly that you should NOT do that. But that is deeper than failing to communicate effectively; that's failing to understand what ideas you have, why you have those ideas, and whether the ideas made it into the writing at all. Possibly, it's a failure to understand if you have ideas.
Is the problem the simple fact that he uses ChatGPT to help him come up with ideas? Potentially. ChatGPT does not contain ideas, it creates statistically plausible writing based upon a large body of data on how writing is constructed. If a person is or becomes susceptible to seeing "ideas" in ChatGPT's outputs, they might begin to have difficulty distinguishing between meaningful and non-meaningful writing. That is, they could lose the ability to tell what makes writing meaningful (as opposed to just technically formed into the shape of an idea)
But is everyone susceptible to that? What makes someone susceptible? Would someone have to have a weak sense of their own thoughts and ideas, or could a strong, accomplished writer that is skilled in expressing themselves fall apart with too much ChatGPT usage?
I don't know. Really interesting case study nonetheless.
Weād probably need a study on it. I do remember on here the posts that say no one is immune to propaganda.
There are news articles about how ChatGPT encourages delusions of grandeur and feeds egos in an unhealthy fashion. Itās possible that ChatGPT fed this guyās ego. Thereās another options
Having used Jasper in a work setting two years ago (because my coworker and I were having to write a hundred articles a month each, our boss told us to use Jasper, and our clients were dissatisfied with everything else) it does feel like producing garbage. We were desperate. Iām so glad to not be in that position anymore.
Maybe this guy started using ChatGPT a little for deadlines, and it took over. Now heās addicted to it and how it makes his life āeasierā.
Yea, I lean towards the conclusion that it will cause negative consequences for anybody.
If ChatGPT can cause people who are otherwise psychologically "normal" to lose the distinction between real and not-real, it's not hard to believe that any writer can lose the distinction between good writing and bad writing.
That being said, I think the reason that ChatGPT has its nails so embedded in so many people is that it sounds like a person and everybody is lonely. Humans are susceptible to attributing feelings and human attributes to non-living, non-thinking things. As it was once said, "humans will pack bond with anything."
Our social nature, and our ability of sophisticated communication, are some of our most distinct traits as a species, so I think we are just really, really vulnerable to something that appears to communicate like a person does.
One of the emergent effects from its development is that it uses a lot of the same cold reading tricks as con artists do:
The new era of tech seems to be built on superstitious behaviour

I can't remember where I first heard it, but here's a joke that's lived rent free in my head for years:
two friends, a Jew and a Christian, are talking about holiday customs.
the Jew says "on Rosh Hashanah, it's traditional to blow the shofar 30 times"
the Christian looks at him awkwardly and says "wow. all we give our chauffeur on Christmas is a bottle of wine."
shana tova everyone
really enjoying the fact that people have said "this too is Torah", "y'all need Jesus", and "by Allah you people are dogs" in the notes. I hit the Abrahamic tumblr trifecta

I love the kryn dynasty, they really went āletās make this 22 year old grad student the head of the FBIā and genuinely didnāt think heād betray them when they denied his research grant
Hey like hereās the thing: literally everything about Essekās entire deal is the platonic ideal of an espionage target.
First off heās:
in a position of high access & authority with minimal oversight (in fact he would likely be the one assigned to investigate his own espionage)
socially isolated, having few family/friends to provide perspective, talk him out of it, or notice odd behavior
not personally invested in the assets the targeting agency wants to obtain, not being consecuted himself and therefore risking little by trading away the beacons
Then thereās his motives. For decades espionage officers have recruited targets based on the acronym MICE: Money, Ideology, Conscience, Ego. Essek is the definitionĀ of an ego-motivated asset. Essek:
is convinced of his own uniqueness and deserving nature
sees himself as unfairly denied or passed over
has no family or friends to whom he can vent frustration over these grievances
feels unheard or dismissed by superiors
believes he has no legitimate avenues to change the status quo or get back at those he resents
has no close personal associates who would be hurt by his actions (i.e. is insulated from the consequences)
He was perfect. The Cerberus Assembly couldnāt have dreamed of a better asset to recruit.Ā
But then. Then. Then the most amazing part is that when the M9 blew into town they accidentally laser-targeted every reason that made him such a good intelligence asset. They:
hit him rapid-fire with the consequences of his actions (Vethās despair over losing her husband, the team being caught in the crossfire in Zadash, the dunamantic potions the Cerberus Assembly was creating with intent to distribute to the Empireās army)
listened to him talk about his unorthodox ideas with genuine interest, proving that the Cerberus Assembly werenāt the only people who thought like he did slash were interested in what he was doing
let him vent his frustrations without judgement and even sympathized
made sure he knew they appreciated his assistance even when he was justĀ ādoing his jobā
showed him the world beyond the rigid, inflexible society he felt trapped in and gave examples of people (Caleb, Beau, Yasha) who had escaped strict authorities to live their own lives.Ā
So while it might seem weird to say, āThe drow traitor who was willing to sell out his countryās religious foundation for personal knowledge totally changed his mind because he found some friends,ā the crew really were the exact impact he needed to shock him out of the mindset for espionage and into āoh god what have I done.ā
Essek isnāt unusual among spies in this. In fact many assets say that they made their opening move for reasons they came to regret but at that point felt they were too far in to quit. Some attempt to sever the relationship and hope no one notices their past transgressions - the M9 caught Essek in the middle of trying to do just that with Ludinus at the peace treaty.Ā But intelligence agencies arenāt in the business of doing what their assets want; theyāre in the business of exploiting them to the fullest. Ludinus likely planned to wait a little while, let Essek stew in guilt and panic, then lean on him increasingly hard to force him either to spy for or defect to the Assembly using the dual threats of Scourger assassination & exposure of his crimes.Ā
But then the crew came in and ruined Ludinusā plansĀ by confronting Essek & making him confess (meaning he couldnāt return to spying) and by pulling him out of his ongoing panic attack up in Eiselcross and assuring him that he had allies who wanted to help and would back him up (showing him the Assembly was not the only way out of his situation). Itās hilariously textbook and as far as I can tell the crew did it entirely by accident. The M9 are unintentional counter-intelligence geniuses. I love it. I love them so much.
(This accidentally turned into a series on Essek & IRL espionage: Parts 1, 2, 3, 4)

WEāVE HIT TERMINAL MEME
@caesarianconfection
Iāve saidĀ āI hate thisā so many times on this website, and never actually meant it, becauseĀ āI hate thisā is just shorthand forĀ āthis is an example of a meme given a twist I wasnāt expecting with intent to surpriseā. Which is, in of itself, a meme on this site. God damn it.
But this⦠This is something else.
The rapidity of a memeās introduction to its zenith to its decline is so rapid that in ten years, youāll need a damn twenty-page manual to explain this. Itāll be as unfunny and hard to explain as jokes in Shakespeare plays, except even more inexplicable because fuck, at least Shakespeareās jokes are usually about anal or fucking your mother, good wholesome sex jokes we can all get behind.
For the love of fuck, how do you explain loss.jpg? How do you explain gun?
ā¦.I THOUGHT THIS WAS A YMCA REFERENCE
it is a YMCA reference - thatās one of the 6 memes being represented here
ok let me see if i can break this down easily. YMCA is the easiest place to start - the song itself has become a meme over time with people changing the lyrics to reference other pop cultural events. so YMCA is meme one (1)
this first lyric replacement (ātake the breadsticks and runā) is a reference to the tumblr meme āstuffing breadsticks into my purseā. i think everyone remembers that one so i wont bother to explain it. thatās meme two (2)
āman door hand hook car doorā is a meme of its own, a creepypasta from i dont remember when. it was a terrible stupid retelling of the genericĀ āstuck in a car while hook handed man tries to kill usā story so the stupid title caught on for memorability. that in and of itself is meme three (3)
āgunā is⦠yeah i dont know how to explain gun. long story short you add gun to the end of a phrase instead of what you expect the last word to be. its shock funny. its everywhere but its popular to add to āman door hand hook car doorā for.. some reason? gun is meme four (4)
and the thing is, this four meme combo is something thats gone around before. meme combos are, itself, a meme. which means taking this meme combo and mixing in another meme actually becomesĀ meme five (5)
which leaves us at loss.jpg. loss.jpg was a terrible bad comic supposed to be about some tragic event, but it was presented so poorly literally no one takes it seriously, and for some reason recreating the four-panel setup has become popular. so thats meme six (6)
(but i need to add that this is the greatest version of loss.jpg i think iāve ever seen. the initialĀ āyoung manā lines up with the guy bursting through the door, and the shock memeĀ āgunā matches the shock scene of the woman in the hospital and idk if OP even thought about that but it makes this just so much better)
I wasnāt going to reblog this, but @pagesofkennaās comprehensive meme-by-meme annotation is a thing of beauty and should be shared.
average tumblr post contains one meme, this post, which contains six, is an outlier and should not be counted
it might also just be a coincidence due to loss.jpgās format but the whole white minimalist four-panel setup is also suspiciously reminiscent of those early 2000ās rage comics
I was getting a political compass vibe too

There are, SO MANY LAYERS to this meme, and Iām going to add more of them by fusing a few of the deepest memes Iāve seen so far XD

This particular chain with 29 layers. By @theforgowolf
Yet another chain with 27 layers. By @thefirstjackal
And this last chain with 29 layers, yet again. @memermemedout
